Moving Check List

Use the following check list to help organize your move. Planning ahead will reduce last minute delays and make your move more successful and more enjoyable.


Before moving day:

Schedule a rental truck or moving company at least six weeks in advance.
Begin gathering packing supplies and start packing early.
Notify your landlord or management company at least 4 weeks in advance if renting.
Change of address forms should also be filed at least a month in advance.
Contact utility companies and schedule turn-on / shut-off dates. At your new home, services should be scheduled to be connected the day before you move in. At your previous residence, they should be turned off the day after you are moving out.

Cable / Satellite
Telephone (Transfer Number or New Number)
If you are moving pets and/or plants, you will need to make special arrangements for their transfer. Most traditional moving companies can't move them for you.

Important Tasks:

If you are traveling a cross-state or thru remote areas, have your car serviced at least a week in advance.
Make hotel reservations if you are traveling long distance or are unable to move in to your residence right away. Don't just assume something will be available.
Carry expensive or sentimental items with you, such as jewelry, family photos, etc.
Family photos and videos.
Jewelry and rare coins.
Birth certificates, wills and other legal documentation.
Stock certificates, insurance policies and financial records.
Computer disks with backups of important files.


Last Minute Tasks:

Pack an essentials box that will last at least 24 hours:
Personal Items - eyeglasses, prescriptions, asprin, extra clothes, etc.
Kitchen Items - snacks, drinks, disposable utensils, cups, and plates, can opener, etc.
Bathroom Items - towels, soap, toilet paper, toothbrush and paste, etc.
Cleaning Items - paper towels, cleaners, broom, dustpan, trash bags etc.
Basic Tools - hammer, screwdrivers (phillips & flat head), scissors, utility knife, tape, etc.
Electronics: telephone, radio, flash light, light bulbs, batteries.
Pencils and paper.
Travelers checks and payment for movers.
Phone book for new neighborhood.
Keys and directions to your new home.


Once you get there:

Register your children in new school(s).
Find new doctors and dentists.
Transfer or open new bank accounts.
Familiarize your children and yourself with your new neighborhood.
